There could be another trail in the Town of Hamburg.
This one would connect Old East Eden and Gowanda State roads through land owned by New York State.
The Greater Buffalo Niagara Regional Transportation Council selected the Town of Hamburg for a feasibility study as part of the council’s regional bicycle master plan implementation program.
Such a trail would include land in the Hampton Brooks Wood Wildlife Management Area. The area includes about 78 acres of forested woodland, about 7 acres of wetland, and approximately 4 acres of brushland, according to the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
The state manages the property for wildlife conservation and wildlife-associated recreation. There is a parking area on Brookside Drive, which is off North Hampton Brook Drive.
The Hamburg Trails Committee has been interested in a trail in that area because of its proximity to the Village of Hamburg and the possibility to create a wooded trail within the town. The trail also would provide access to Eighteen Mile Creek.
“This is the first step of many in a project that will offer residents and visitors of Hamburg the chance to get to know our beautiful local forest and have more access to Eighteen Mile Creek,” committee Chairwoman Kathryn Walsh said in a news release.
A study is expected to begin in September.
The proposed trail would fit in with a larger trail plan that follows the creek and connects with the Eighteen Mile Creek overlook, Anna Mae Bacon Bird Sanctuary, Eighteen Mile Creek Golf Course and the town’s Taylor Road Family Recreation Facility.
The transportation council launched its Regional Bike Master Plan in 2020 to develop a network of pathways, bikeways, greenway trails and other facilities to connect neighborhoods to key destinations.
