A $450 million project to replace or renovate 27 service areas over 570 miles along the New York State Thruway is on target to be completed by the fall of 2025, acting Thruway Authority Commissioner Frank Hoare said during a recent legislative budget hearing in Albany.
โThirteen are already completed, and another 10 are under construction,โ Hoare said.
The Pembroke service area is the 10th new service area to open to Thruway customers, as part of a $450 million initiative to modernize all 27 Thruway service areas.ย
A spokeswoman for the Thruway Authority said more renovated service areas are slated to reopen before the start of the summer travel season.
โWe are looking at a significant portion being completed by the end of this calendar year, as well,โ said Jennifer Givner, director of media relations and communications for the Thruway Authority.
The project began in July 2021, when the Thruway closed 10 of its rest stops for reconstruction. Empire State Thruway Partners โ an entity created by Applegreen, a convenience store conglomerate based in Ireland โ was awarded the contract to operate the service areas and is leading the privately funded project.
