Steve Jones was a Cowboys fan when he arrived more than 30 years ago in Johnson City, next to Binghamton. He left the Bronx to join an older brother who had moved upstate, and Jones quickly became aware that his football allegiance ran against the grain in Broome County.
“I always thought it was a Giants town,” said Steve, who has an intimate reason for understanding how that phenomenon has changed:
He lifted his hand to touch a charging bison, on his cap.
His oldest son is DaQuan Jones, pride of Johnson City, whose fine season for the Buffalo Bills at defensive tackle came to an abrupt halt when he tore a pectoral muscle against Jacksonville.
“You can’t question His plans,” Steve said Thursday, pointing heavenward, and he finds consolation in reflecting on how his son offered a powerful reminder of his skills in the few games he had.
The photo ended up in storage at Highmark Stadium, and now Debbie Haley is trying to solve a mystery: Who are the two little boys decked out in Bills regalia in the picture?
