SUNY Erie Community College is looking to move out of its underused South Campus in Orchard Park in favor of a smaller site in the Southtowns, ECC officials said.
ECC officials said they are seeking new potential locations for its South Campus as it looks to consolidate its facilities to operate more sustainably while maintaining the college’s presence in the Southtowns.
Both local SUNY schools have been seeking new presidents for most of this year after their former leaders stepped down.
The SUNY Erie board of trustees voted Thursday to issue a request for proposals for a new location โnear the collegeโs South Campusโ to move the 11 remaining programs and other services on the Orchard Park campus to a smaller site.
ECC Board Chair Jeffrey Stone said the college has been discussing ways to consolidate its three-campus footprint to reflect much smaller enrollments and changing program needs for years โ including calls by some to close the South Campus completely.
But he said feedback from the community, county, faculty and students convinced trustees that ECC still needs a South Campus โ just not the South Campus it currently maintains on Southwestern Boulevard, where it currently occupies three of eight 1960s-era buildings.
