He Wolfed it
Wolf Blitzer, the veteran CNN journalist and pride of his Kenmore hometown, has received numerous accolades during his distinguished career with CNN.
Last week, Blitzer added one more:
He was the subject of a limerick on National Public Radio’s news quiz show “Wait, Wait … Don’t Tell Me.”
Each week, a “Wait, Wait” participant tries to guess the last word in three limericks related to recent news events.
On last week’s program, announcer Bill Kurtis read this poem:
“Here’s a tweet from the CNN fixture
Showing off his eponymous spritzer.
It’s a fun brunch with booze
When – oh, no – breaking news
Get back to the office, Wolf…”
“Blitzer,” contestant Jennifer Hill answered correctly.
The limerick was based on a post on X, formerly Twitter, that Blitzer made July 21 while dining at the El Presidente restaurant in Washington, D.C. A photo showed Blitzer holding a drink menu featuring the “Wolf Spritzer,” a $15 cocktail made of aperol, Montelobos mezcal, lemon and cava.
Blitzer posted the image at 12:47 p.m. One hour later, a small bit of news appeared on X: President Biden announced he was dropping his re-election bid.
Soon after, there was Blitzer back on air helping to anchor CNN’s breaking-news coverage, as noted by numerous X users who jokingly speculated on his level of inebriation.
On the broadcast, “Wait, Wait” host Peter Sagal contrasted Blitzer’s happy, care-free expression in the photo with his solemn appearance on air.
“He looks sad, as if his Wolf Spritzer was just off camera with the ice melting,” Sagal said to audience laughter. “And he’s not allowed to drink it.”
