Relishing Ted’s free dogs
If you’ve ever heard legend tell of a magical golden keychain that gives the holder unlimited free hot dogs at Ted’s – it’s true.
“We don’t give them away often but, when we do, it usually means something or is donated for charity,” said Evan Ortolani, Ted’s Hot Dogs president. “They can sell for $1,000 at auction. Crazy, I know.”
Brian Hayden, communications director at the Buffalo History Museum, is one such holder of the coveted keychain. It was awarded to him in 2018 after he wrote a piece for his former employer, tourism bureau Visit Buffalo Niagara, about how much he enjoys the Buffalo eatery. The flat keychain depicts a hot dog with the name “Ted’s” in the middle and grants the holder, in perpetuity, one free hot dog with the purchase of any grilled item.
“The keychain, which has since lost its golden luster, has become the stuff of Hayden family lore, with my nephew Davy asking to inherit it when I ‘get very old and pass away,’ “ Hayden wrote on Facebook.
Hayden has long wondered if the keychain would work at the far-flung Ted’s location in a suburb of Phoenix so, on a recent trip to Arizona, he took a side quest to Tempe to find out.
“The same smoky aroma of chargrilled Sahlen’s I had grown up with hung over the air outside the Tempe Ted’s,” Hayden wrote. “And … how exciting! … this Ted’s also honors the golden keychain thousands of miles from home.”

Buffalonians could relate to the slight.
It wasn’t long before Lobo backtracked on X, formerly known as Twitter.
