What’s in a name?
National Signing Day is a chance for college coaches to add young talent to their programs and build a buzz for the coming year with recruits who reflect the program’s identity.
Sometimes, that’s unintentionally taken literally.
The Canisius University Griffins men’s soccer team on Wednesday announced the signing of Griffen Dehm, a defender from Baldwinsville, outside of Syracuse.
This, however, is not an outlier – if a little wiggle room is allowed. The Hilbert Hawks women’s soccer team last year signed a defender named Isabelle Hilbert, while a Fredonia men’s soccer starter is named Fred Butler.
It’s probably unreasonable for a player with the last name Buffalo or Bull to join UB, and someone named Niagara or Purple Eagles seems unlikely for Monteagle Ridge.
Quick Google searches do not reveal anyone who’s ever competed for St. Bonaventure named “Bonnie,” nor anyone who’s played for Daemen University named “Damon.”
That’s low-hanging fruit.
Where the rubber didn’t hit the road
Mark Poloncarz had a pretty good Tuesday.
The Democratic Erie County executive won re-election in convincing fashion over challenger and political newcomer Chrissy Casilio, vanquishing his latest foe by an even wider margin that his last victory in 2019.
He also saw his party post a number of Election Day wins, both in Western New York and across the nation.
And he also celebrated his birthday.
