Traffic? What traffic? Fears of gridlock on eclipse day never materialized

Traffic jams had something in common with the sun Monday: There was no sign of them all day.

As eclipse-watching crowds gathered across the region in spots like Niagara Falls, the Outer Harbor, Sahlen Field and Knox Farm State Park, drivers had smooth sailing to their destinations.

The lack of traffic problems leading up to the eclipse eliminated potential delays emergency services providers had been preparing to deal with.

There was no serious heavy traffic or gridlock in the city as of midafternoon, Mayor Byron W. Brown said at Eclipse Fest at Buffalo State University.

Buffalo State University was proud to be the only major university in the SUNY system to hold a major public eclipse event.ย 

The mayor, who was viewing the event with other VIPs, said he believes many people heeded official recommendations to try to stay home and enjoy eclipse watching from there.

โ€œThere is no bad seat in the City of Buffalo,โ€ Brown said.

Authorities encouraged the public to be ready for roads crammed with traffic. They advised those venturing out to watch the eclipse in a public place to leave early and be prepared to stay late, and to pack any needed supplies in case they were stuck in their vehicle on the road for hours.
