Markers have been installed in Buffalo’s Outer Harbor to warn boaters that a new stone breakwater is under the water surface there, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Buffalo District reported.
The breakwater โย 17,200 tons of bedding stone โ was installed in September and October at the opening of Slip 3, according to the report. It is intended to keep silt from building up in the slip.
White cylinder buoys reading “Danger” and labeled with the orange hazard warning diamond are floating at the opening of the slip. The buoys have solar-powered lights that can be seen for 2 miles.
More stone will be installed next year and work is expected to be finished in September, the report said.ย When completed, the breakwater will extend all the way across the entrance to the slip, with part of it submerged to allow water from Lake Erie to flow in and out.ย
Signs will be posted along Fuhrmann Boulevard and Wilkeson Pointe to advise visitors to take safety precautions.
The Army Corps of Engineers noted that the project is part of an overall plan to make wetlands better for fish spawning after decades of degradation from industrial development.
