‘We are deeply touched’: Family of Niagara Falls bridge crash victims mourn, ask for privacy

The Niagara Falls Police Department has identified the two occupants killed in the fiery car crash Wednesday at the Rainbow Bridge border checkpoint.

Grand Island residents Kurt P. Villani and his wife, Monica Villani, both 53, died after their vehicle raced through an intersection, hit a median and went through the air before slamming into border booths and exploding. The Villani family owns Gui’s Lumber, which has seven ACE Hardware stores in Western New York.

The FBI investigated and declared the incident was not a terror attack. The crash had caused the Rainbow Bridge and three others between Western New York and Canada to shut down until it was better understood what happened.

The Villani family, along with the Maniccia family and Gui’s Lumber put out a statement Friday: “We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to all that extended prayers, condolences and well wishes. We are deeply touched. At this point, we are requesting privacy so we may begin the process of healing. Thank you.”

President Joe Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau were informed of the incident as the FBI investigated.ย

The incident is under investigation by the NFPD Crash Management Unit.
