West Seneca man sentenced in theft of $5,000 in SNAP benefits

A West Seneca man who pleaded guilty to welfare fraud for stealing over $5,000 in benefits was sentenced Tuesday to three years’ probation, 200 hours of community service and full restitution, the New York State Inspector’s Office announced.

Christopher Sadowski, 36, claimed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits for his children during two six-month periods in 2019 and 2021, authorities said. However, he did not have custody of either child and also didn’t have the ability to communicate with them because of active orders of protection. In addition, he did not have any contact with the children’s mothers who did have custody.

Sadowski pleaded guilty fifth-degree welfare fraud. He made full restitution before his sentencing.

โ€œTo divert resources from such a critical program is despicable and jeopardizes the long-term sustainability of the safety net the welfare system provides. My office and I are proud of our role in protecting these benefits from those who would take advantage of them,” saidย State Inspector General Lucy Lang in a statement.
