Winter is about to make up for its late arrival in WNY … maybe with a vengeance

Put away your umbrella and your windbreaker and dust off your shovel.

Here comes Buffalo winter.

Forecasters are watching a developing weather pattern that they say will bring much colder temperature to the region and โ€“ thanks to an unfrozen Lake Erie โ€“ might bring significant snowfall during a winter season that has been short on both. That could have ramifications for everything from school closings and travel delays to whether Josh Allen will be forced to hand off more and pass less when the Buffalo Bills play the Pittsburgh Steelers during this weekend’s NFL playoff game at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park.

“There’s quite a bit of uncertainty with the system this weekend,” National Weather Service meteorologist Phillip Pandolfo said Tuesday.

The temperature has not dipped below 20 degrees here for almost a year. And if the extended forecast is right, it’s not going to be that cold at least through almost mid-January.

But officials are not taking any chances, surely wanting to avoid the criticism about communication and advanced warning that followed December 2022’s historic Christmas week blizzard that claimed 47 lives.
