With the eclipse three weeks away, Hochul urges New Yorkers to protect themselves

New Yorkers need to be wary of more than the sun on April 8.

Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday launched an effort to protect people from scams, fake merchandise and phony accommodation listings during the solar eclipse next month.

She also announced additional options for acquiring eyewear that is made for safely viewing the eclipse.

The “I LOVE NY” eclipse-viewing glasses are being made available at 30 locations across the state, according to the Governor’s Office. These include New York State welcome centers and select service areas along the New York State Thruway.

In a news release, Hochul also released a warning for those making arrangements to view the event. To avoid being a victim, consumers are being urged to pay for services and merchandise using a credit card and deal only with reputable vendors, and thoroughly vet them. Consumers are encouraged to be circumspect when providing personal and financial information online.

“The total solar eclipse will be a once-in-a-generation experience for our state, and itโ€™s critical that New Yorkers have the tools and information to enjoy it safely,” Hochul said in a statement. “From heightening awareness of scams to providing thousands of New Yorkers with eclipse glasses, Iโ€™m focused on giving everyone the resources they need to safely experience this extraordinary event.”ย 

Western New York is in the path of totality, which means that about 3:18 p.m. on April 8, the moon will completely block out all light from the sunย for up to 3 minutes and 45 seconds as the moon passes between the sun and the earth.

Eye protection will be critical for those seeking to view the eclipse, as it is unsafe to look directly at the sun without specialized eyewear. Doing so can result in serious injury, and regular sunglasses are not a safe replacement.
