MOUNTAINDALE- Todd Pfleger, the New York State Coordinator for the New England Antiquities Research Association (NERA), believes that carvings found on a stone in Mountaindale could be historic in nature. Pfleger was called after a man walking his dog near Church Road discovered the carvings, or petroglyphs, are they are called.
“There appears to be a pretty well defined arrow here,” said Pfleger, pointing to the stone. “So you have the arrowhead you have the shaft and then there’s possibly like the the feathering at the tail of the feather.”
Ryan Metro, an amateur history buff, called Pfleger after his friend who found found the carvings.
“A local friend of ours and was walking his dog along here a couple of days ago in the rain, he sat down, I don’t know if he sat down on the rock or what he was doing, but he called me instantly,” said Metro.
Pfleger believes the carvings could be authentic. “Over here, we’re thinking is a depiction of what looks like a man. Here’s the head. Here, here’s the shoulders, the arms, the body,” said Pfleger, pointing to the stone.
Pfleger plans to bring in additional experts to Mountaindale from NERA over the next several weeks in an effort to determine the nature and authenticity of the carvings.
