POUGHKEEPSIE – City firefighters responded to a house fire on Weed Street early Sunday morning and recovered two victims in the burning house. The fire at the house adjacent to the basketball court was reported to City 911 at approximately 4:28 a.m.
Poughkeepsie Fire Department Deputy Chief Vincent Parise said his department arrived on the scene just minutes after being dispatched and arrived to find the single-family home with fire on the second floor of the dwelling. The scene commander transmitted a second alarm, bringing manpower and equipment to aid in the battle while the Poughkeepsie firefighters entered and made an immediate search of the house. Two adult victims were located and immediately removed from the burning building. Lifesaving measures were taken and the scene and continued in the ambulance as they were being rushed to a local hospital.
A firefighter at the scene indicated that no evidence of working smoke detectors was observed by the first responders in the structure.
Sources have told Mid-Hudson News that one of the victims had passed away and the condition of the second resident was unavailable. The identities of the two adults have not been released. Dutchess County property records indicate that the home is owned by Marc and Anna Cherry.
The fire was extinguished and placed under control by Poughkeepsie firefighters joined at the scene by firefighters from the Arlington, Fairview, and Highland fire departments at 5:48 Sunday morning.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
