KINGSTON – There were no words when they gathered at Firemen’s Park at the intersection of Hurley and Washington avenues in Kingston on Monday to commemorate the losses during the September 11 terrorist attack in 2001.
There was silence just like there were no words from many of us when we saw the moving immediacy of that attack on the World Trade Center 22 years ago on a TV screen.
Most of the sound heard at Monday’s gathering came from the brakes, tires and engines working at this intersection during the morning commute.
Firemen, police, other first responders and members of the public gathered in silence to commemorate this fateful day under cloudy, spitting skies that seemed to dominate the warmer months this year.
“The firefighters wanted to be able come and pay their respect today to all of the fallen heroes that were involved in 9/11 and to pay their respect to all of the civilians who lost their lives that day,” said Mayor Steve Noble, from a nearby sidewalk. “So, we’re gathered out here in this dreary weather to commemorate the anniversary of that terrible day.”
This is a now an annual commemoration that darkens a day on the eve of autumn’s color, something that is now somberly accepted.
“It’s a really a difficult day,” said Noble.
