CATSKILL – Greene County’s state of emergency will remain in effect to prohibit the City of New York from transporting asylum seekers in need of temporary assistance and housing to the county.
This follows New York’s filing of a voluntary discontinuance against Greene County ending its lawsuit attempting to force legal approval to place migrants in the county.
“We’re very pleased that Greene County successfully identified the fact that New York City did not follow the laws and procedures established by New York State for the transportation and housing of homeless people to other counties,” said Greene County Legislature Chairman Patrick Linger. “It’s also encouraging that our county was successful in beating back a lawsuit made by a city of 8.5 million residents.”
He said Greene County residents are “certainly concerned about the health and well-being of people coming to New York State; however, small rural counties like ours simply do not have the housing, educational and service resources to absorb any unplanned influx of families.”
