WASHINGTON D.C.- A Westchester Congressman is drawing national attention after he pulled a fire alarm in a Congressional office building just hours before a controversial vote on a temporary spending plan that averted a government shutdown.
In response to the incident, Congressman Jamaal Bowman (D, NY-16) issued an official statement on Saturday evening. “Today, as I was rushing to make a vote, I came to a door that is usually open for votes but today would not open. I am embarrassed to admit that I activated the fire alarm, mistakenly thinking it would open the door. I regret this and sincerely apologize for any confusion this caused.”
Some of Bowman’s colleagues don’t believe his actions were accidental.
“My four-year-old knows pulling the fire alarm sounds the fire alarm,” said Congressman Marc Molinaro (R, NY-19). “This was an intentional effort to delay today’s vote.”
“This is absolutely outrageous — and potentially a violation of the law,” said Congressman Mike Lawler (R, NY-17).
Following the activation of the fire alarm, Capitol Police evacuated the building. After safety checks inside of the building were conducted, members and staff were permitted to return.
