NEW YORK – The Office of Special Investigation in the State Attorney General’s Office has opened an investigation into the death of a woman on Thursday, July 27, following a motor vehicle incident on the Thruway in the Town of Cornwall.
The woman, whose name police have not made public, died following the crash that involved an off-duty member of the New York City Police Department.
The victim was riding a motorcycle northbound shortly after midnight on Thursday when a motor vehicle driven by the police officer struck her motorcycle.
State law requires the Office of Special Investigation to assess every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission.
Under the law, the officer may be on-duty or off-duty, and the victim may be armed or unarmed.
The victim may or may not be in custody or incarcerated.
If the investigation assessment indicates an officer may have caused the death, the agency proceeded to conduct a full investigation of the incident.
