POUGHKEEPSIE – City Mayor Marc Nelson told Mid-Hudson News that he is leaving city government when his term expires in December. Nelson is in contract negotiations with the town of Simsbury, Connecticut for the position of town manager in January.
“In January I’ll be leaving city government,” Nelson announced, adding “I have elected to move on to a new opportunity – moving back to Connecticut to work in a very historic and beautiful town called Simsbury.” The town is a suburb of Hartford where Nelson had served as tax collector before coming to the City of Poughkeepsie under then-Mayor Rob Rolison.
Nelson started as finance commissioner in 2016 followed by appointment as city administrator under Rolison. When Rolison was sworn in as state senator in January, Nelson became mayor under the city charter while also serving as city administrator.
Nelson stressed that he is staying in his office until the end of December. He has been working with department heads to develop the city’s budget for next year. He also emphasized that he will still be in city hall after the first of the year. “I’m here through the end of my term in December and will stay on sd city administrator for a week or two in January.” The January extension, he pointed out, is to help the incoming mayor. “My main goal is to make sure the transition is smooth.”
