POUGHKEEPSIE – As of Tuesday afternoon, the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department has seized 35 illegal handguns from the streets of the city so far this year. The two latest were recovered during a foot pursuit on Garden Street Tuesday afternoon.
Speaking with Mid-Hudson News earlier in the day on Tuesday, Police Captain Rich Wilson mentioned that two illegal handguns were recovered during arrests by his agency over the weekend, bringing the count to 33 firearms.
Wilson said most of the handguns had been recovered through investigations or other proactive measures by the officers.
Of the handguns, Wilson said, “The majority of those have been involved either in some criminal action or criminal behavior, or are suspected to be a part of, or involved in previously undetermined crimes.”
Just a short time after speaking with Mid-Hudson News on Tuesday, Wilson and other officers were on Garden Street after a suspect attempting to flee an officer on foot, discarded two handguns just moments before being captured. The two handguns were recovered from a catch basin.
The City of Poughkeepsie police have seized, on average, one illegal handgun per week to date in 2023.
