PORT JERVIS – America’s flag was given a stirring tribute by the approximately 50 individuals who attended the City of Port Jervis’ 45th Annual Pause for the Pledge Ceremony on Wednesday evening, June 14.
The National Flag Day celebration included a half-hour concert of patriotic songs performed in advance of the ceremony by the Broome Street Band. Led by Jason Csencits, the concert was performed on the front lawn of City Hall, as Flag Day programs and small American flags were distributed.
Port Jervis Mayor Kelly Decker opened the ceremony by tracing the history of National Flag Day in recognition of America’s flag. Decker issued a proclamation calling for such recognition and celebration in the City of Port Jervis and encouraged all to participate in properly displaying America’s flag. Decker also wished a 248th happy birthday to the U.S. Army, which coincides with Flag Day.
Other participants in the ceremony included Audrey Innella and Toni Marion of the Old Mine Road Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Port Jervis High School Choir under the direction of Ruth Gordon, Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks Port Jervis Lodge No. 645 Exalted Ruler Erin Morrissey, and Catherine Westfall who sang an original song she wrote for Flag Day 2005. She also led a patriotic sing-a-long, inviting all who were present to join in.
