MIDDLETOWN – Frederick Slanovec, the Middletown City Police detective who pled guilty to disorderly conduct for slapping a 14-year-old boy in the face while off-duty in a restaurant has died from a self-inflicted wound.
His death was confirmed by a number of sources.
Slanovec had been drinking during a private party at the Olde Erie restaurant in Middletown on May 6 when the confrontation with the youth took place.
The detective admitted to striking the boy and pushing his head so that it struck a wall.
As part of his plea deal with the Orange County District Attorney’s Office and Middletown City Court, he was to attend alcohol abuse treatment, which he had done.
Slanovec’s death came on the same day that a Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office member also died unexpectedly.
