POUGHKEEPSIE – A number of employees at a rehabilitation center became ill Wednesday afternoon, drawing a response from several first responders. The City of Poughkeepsie Fire and Poice departments responded to the Main Street facility just after noon on October 4.
The incident was treated as a “hazardous material” response, calling for special protocols at the facility. Staff from the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response also responded to the Grand Rehabilitation and Nursing at River Valley facility to assist.
At least four members of the kitchen staff were transported to local hospitals for treatment of “seizure-like” symptoms. Firefighters searched the entire facility with meters to determine the possble presence of dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide that could have triggered the reaction.
The cause has not been determined and fire personnel was still investigating the incident into the afternoon hours.
