LOCH SHELDRAKE- The New Hope Community has unveiled the completion of Andrew’s Garden, a 1.5-acre sensory exploration garden at the center of the nonprofit’s Loch Sheldrake campus. The garden is carefully curated to provide tranquility and serenity to the people served by New Hope Community, its employees and visitors.
New Hope Community, an organization providing person-centered services and supports for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, says the space uses nature and other elements to evoke the five senses. It was designed to be accessible to people who experience the world in different ways.
“This space is so much more than just a garden. It’s a way to further our mission to make outdoor spaces accessible and inclusive to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities,” said Chief Executive Officer Debra McGinness. “It’s rare to find parks and natural settings that are both accessible and offer a sensory reprieve from the world, so we wanted to create our own space that encourages relaxation and connection with nature. We are so grateful to our donors for helping make this a reality.”
Much of the project was built using funds provided by donors. Through a generous donation from a long-time supporter, the garden was named after New Hope Community resident Andrew, who has lived at New Hope Community since May 2012.
The concept was first approved by the New Hope Community board in December 2018 and faced delays due to the pandemic. Now complete, Andrew’s Garden will be enjoyed by staff and the people New Hope Community serves.
