NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh Police Department has made a significant effort to diversify its ranks of sworn officers with 48 percent from a racial or ethnic minority. That word came from Commissioner Jose Gomerez, himself a Dominican-American. He made the announcement during Hispanic Heritage Month.
“I know that the work is challenging, but it’s through our collective dedication and resilience that we continue to grow stronger, more inclusive, and more reflective of the community we serve,” Gomerez said.
I salute each and every one of you this Hispanic Heritage Month and want to assure you that my commitment to diversity remains steadfast. Together, we will continue to work towards a department that mirrors the rich diversity of Newburgh,” he said.
People of Hispanic heritage comprise the largest population in Newburgh following by African Americans and Caucasians.
