MONTGOMERY – It’s has been 22 years since the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center, and Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus thought about the generations that were not alive then.
Neuhaus spoke at Orange County’s annual commemoration at Thomas Bull Park to honor those county residents who perished that day and the veterans from the county who died in the subsequent military actions arising from that terrorist attack.
“We do remember, and we do reflect. And we never forget in this county,” he said.
Neuhaus started the day in New York City, and during a ceremony he watched young firemen, many who were young or not possibly born on that day in 2001, honor the generations before them who died in the attack.
“We saw probationary firefighters learning and being part of the ceremonies,” he said. “I saw something which was beautiful today: young kids who were not alive then talking about their uncles, talking about their aunts, talking about their grandparents.”
And when Neuhaus returned to Orange County later in the day, he talked to his four kids, age 6-13, about what they learned in school on Monday about that fateful day 22 years ago.
“Every one of them learned something about September 11 today, which I thought was great,” he said.
