POUGHKEEPSIE – National Night Out 2023 at Poughkeepsie City Hall Tuesday night drew hundreds of city residents to the festivities sponsored by the City of Poughkeepsie police department. The historically well-attended event was held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. with more than 50 organizations, many of which are community-based, set up and introducing attendees to their services.
National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community, according to the organization. It is designed to provide an opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. It is held on the first Tuesday in August in most states.
Detective Karen Zirbel said, “I have organized this event with multiple community-based organizations so that people can come to one place and see all of the amazing resources we have here. It’s pretty awesome to see everyone together, in true community fashion.”
The police and fire departments displayed their emergency vehicles, along with other organizations, so that attendees young and old, could explore the apparatus and equipment and ask questions to the people that operate them. There were several police k9s walking around meeting both the children and adults. Police drone and robot demonstrations drew large crowds.
