MONTICELLO – The Sullivan County Human Rights Commission is in need of a new executive director and county lawmakers are mulling over how to proceed.
Some lawmakers like Ira Steingart feel the position should be full-time; it had been part-time. Others would like it to remain a part-time job.
Deputy County Attorney Tom Cawley said either way, the local commission does not wield punitive power.
“In real serious instances of what I believe to be discriminatory conduct we don’t have the authority to go after them anyway, it has to be the state Division (of Human Rights). So, maybe having something on our website making sure people have the ability to know – I don’t even know that is who they should be calling,” he said.
Cawley said there are a number of housing complaints filed locally, particularly in Monticello. Other complaints deal with employment issues, he said.
