YONKERS – Mayor Mike Spano, Tuesday, called on the US government to issue a state of emergency as a result of the heavy rains and flooding from the September 29 storm that devastated New York City and the Hudson Valley, including the City of Yonkers.
By issuing a state of emergency, the federal government is able to release funding to the state, which can be used to assist local communities affected by the storm.
“Friday’s storm resulted in flash flooding, travel disruptions and damage in many of our low-lying areas and neighborhoods,” Spano. “The declaration by the federal government can provide the tools necessary to quickly and safely recover from the effects of the storm. I ask our federal representatives to be our voices in Washington and let our residents and businesses know we have their backs.”
Spano declared a state of emergency in the Yonkers during the September 29th storm. Yonkers emergency crews were deployed early to mitigate damages to roadways and property.
Now through Friday, Yonkers Public Works is offering curbside pickup of storm debris removal for residents. Residents are encouraged to make an appointment via the Mayor’s Helpline at 914-377-HELP (4357). Accepted items include white goods (appliances), organics, construction debris, etc.
