POUGHKEEPSIE – City cops have taken another gun off the streets and arrested a 38-year-old man who had been using the weapon to randomly shoot-up the neighborhood. The incident occurred on Sunday, November 19, at approximately 1:12 a.m.
City 911 received reports of shots fired near Main and Rose Streets on Sunday and dispatched multiple patrol units and officers assigned to the Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) unit to the area. First arriving officers heard additional shots being fired and moved toward the gunfire on foot.
Officers observed a man with a handgun and ordered him to drop the weapon. The armed man disregarded the commands and fled into a building. A perimeter was established and the suspect, subsequently identified as Jaime Santos-Castaneda, 38, was located a short time later and taken into custody.
A loaded Raven Arms MP-25 .25 caliber handgun and a quantity of narcotics were recovered from the scene.
Following an investigation by crime scene technicians and detectives, Santos-Castaneda was charged with the felonies of criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm. He was also charged with the misdemeanor crimes of criminal possession of a controlled substance and reckless endangerment.
He was processed and held pending arraignment.
Due to a manpower shortage at the city police department, officers from the Town of Poughkeepsie police assisted the city at the scene and they responded to other calls while city police were unavailable.
