MIDDLETOWN- If you ask 93-year-old Carol Cook, she would say that guardian angels wear reflective vests because on September 21st when she fell outside of her home, it was two state Department of Transportation (DOT) workers who came to her rescue.
DOT workers Bill Scott and Ventura Hita-Garcia were surveying State Route 211 after a heavy September rainfall when they stopped to clear a dead deer from the roadway. When they got out of their vehicle, they heard a dog barking from a nearby house and when they looked they saw a woman who was leaving the home fall to the ground.
“She got halfway down the walkway and fell down, face first, on the matt there,” said Scott. Hita-Garcia went to assist Cook, and Scott called for help.
“These kind men just kept talking to me. I didn’t know what had happened, I really didn’t. So I’m very thankful,” said Cook.
Lance McMillian, the regional director at DOT, recognized Scott and Hita-Garcia with certificates of appreciation for their heroism.
This week’s meeting was the first time Cook saw the men since the incident. She was grateful for their help and has made a full recovery since the incident.
“So I’m really grateful, you may have saved my life,” said Cooke. “But the Lord put you there at the right minute, he had it all figured out. I’m very grateful.”
