HYDE PARK – A man was killed early Sunday morning in a one-vehicle rollover accident on Salt Point Turnpike near Rymph Road. Members of the Roosevelt Fire District and NDP EMS were dispatched to the accident at 5:19 a.m. on December 10, 2023.
The original 911 dispatch indicated that the accident involved a car and a pedestrian or bicyclist. The follow-up dispatch from the county said another caller said the vehicle had rolled over and the person was trapped underneath the vehicle in the area of 537 Salt Point Turnpike in Hyde Park.
Roosevelt Fire District Chief Jeff Scala said the first arriving emergency personnel arrived and found the overturned motor vehicle with the sole occupant “partially ejected” from the wreckage. Chief Scala confirmed that the ejected operator was deceased and the call went from a rescue operation to one of recovery. The fire department closed Salt Point Turnpike down between Cream Street and Peach Road until 9:45 a.m. to allow the recovery and investigation to take place.
The scene was turned over to the Hyde Park police department, assisted by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office Accident Reconstruction Unit. The law enforcement agencies worked together to perform an extensive accident investigation.
The members of the Roosevelt Fire Department remained on the scene to keep the road closed for the investigation and assist the Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Hyde Park Police Chief Robert Benson told Mid-Hudson News that he planned to release the victim’s name on Monday after notification to family members had been made.
