Dear Editor,
2024 is off to a calamitous weather start. First a weekend snowstorm, then heavy rain flooding many areas throughout the Hudson Valley and with 2023 shattering global annual heat records it’s frightening to think of what’s ahead.
As helpless as it all feels, there are specific things we New Yorkers and those of us in the Hudson Valley who are especially feeling the effects of this crisis can do, and that starts with passing the full intention of the New York H.E.A.T. Act. Also known as the Home Energy Affordable Transition Act.
With this bill New York has an opportunity to counter the fossil fuel status quo by providing New Yorkers with safe, affordable, and pollution-free temperature control. The bill would align New York’s outdated energy regulations with the state’s climate law, making clean energy more affordable for all.
In her state-of-the-state speech, Gov. Hochul signaled her support of key sections of the proposed law but a full range of changes to energy policy and affordability is still to be negotiated, including protections to cap utility bills for low- and moderate-income households.
Outdated energy laws have propped up the toxic oil and gas industry for far too long. It’s time to include the full provisions of the NY HEAT Act in the 2024 executive budget.
