MONTICELLO – Mayor George Nikolados and Monticello Village Trustees Michael Banks and Carmen Rue may be disqualified from seeking re-election in the March elections. The elections petitions for all three who were seeking the Democratic line on the ballot were disqualified by the Sullivan County Board of Elections for technical reasons.
Nikolados did not return a call for comment on Tuesday.
Whether they will have an opportunity to run as independent candidates could not be determined as of the close of business on Tuesday. The time to file may have passed.
Trustee Rochelle Massey had filed petitions to challenge Nikolados for the mayor’s post and she may be the sole name on the ballot. Her husband, Gordon Jenkins, also a village trustee, had served as mayor several years ago.
If Massey does become mayor, the board majority will select her replacement as a village trustee.
