STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — From TGI Fridays to Boston Market, several chain restaurants have closed their doors on Staten Island in recent years.
But this year, a number of chains have announced the closure of select locations across the country, according to Eat This, Not That!, which compiled a list of the 10 chain restaurants which have closed or are in the process of closing locations in 2024.
In announcing the closures, several of the spots indicated that the decision to downsize was forced upon them by financial hardships; but closing certain locations is not necessarily a sign of struggle, as detailed by the Eat This Not That! report.
“Since the start of 2024, a wide variety of chains — from popular cookie chain Crumbl to Tex-Mex spot Tijuana Flats — have closed multiple locations. In some cases, the closings are directly tied to financial difficulties and may even coincide with bankruptcy filings. However, not all closings are a sign that a brand is in trouble. Some have cited other considerations, like the underperformance of specific stores. Others may simultaneously announce a slew of new openings, a signal the chain is actually growing even as it shutters a handful of locations. Meanwhile, still other restaurant chains have closed suddenly and without warning, leaving customers and even employees wondering what went wrong.”
In February, the final remaining Boston Market on Staten Island closed its doors. In recent years, the company has shuttered locations across the country as its corporate office remains embroiled in legal woes among worker, vendor and landlord lawsuits.
