ALBANY- The State Education Department (SED) released the math and English language arts (ELA) scores for students in third through eighth grades, and the Scarsdale Union Free School District in Westchester County tied at the top of the list for student performance. Statewide, 52 percent of students tested proficient or better in math, and 48 percent in ELA.
In Orange County, Cornwall topped the list with a 70 percent proficiency in ELA and 78 percent in math. Scoring lowest in the county was Middletown, with 29 percent in ELA and 32 percent in math.
In Dutchess County, Rhinebeck made the stop spot with 67 percent in ELA and 68 percent in math. Poughkeepsie had the lowest score with 27 percent in ELA and 19 percent in math.
In Sullivan County, Livingston Manor emerged on top of the ELA list with 48 percent or better proficiency. The education department did not list a math score for the district. Fallsburg had the lowest ELA score at 16 percent.
In Ulster County, New Paltz School District was the top performer, with 59 percent of students at or above the proficiency level for ELA, and 64 percent for math. The county’s lowest score went to Ellenville School District with 21 percent ELA proficiency and 23 percent proficiency in math.
Finally, in Putnam County, Garrison had the highest ELA score at 78 percent or better proficiency. The education department did not have a math score for the district. Carmel School District had the lowest score in Putnam with 37 percent in ELA and 46 percent in math.
The test scores reported by the department were for the 2022-2023 school year.
