GOSHEN – Middletown City Court Judge Richard Guertin will hang up his municipal robes on January 1 and assume a new role as an Orange County Court judge.
In November, the long-time attorney was elected unopposed to the vacancy left when William DeProspo resigned earlier this year.
Guertin, who has been Middletown City Court judge for some seven years, will now be handling a different kind of cases.
“In city court I handled criminal and all of the civil cases, which could include all of the landlord-tenants, small claims, traffic matters, city code violations, and parking issues, whereas on the county court level, I will be handling felonies – major crimes – and I think I will be dealing with gun permit applications as well,” he said.
During his career, Guertin has been in private practice for some 35 years and has served as Middletown city corporation counsel and attorney for other municipalities as well.
