Kingston Town Clerk passes away

TOWN OF KINGSTON – Long-time public servant Dennis Weiss has died, his family announced on Facebook on Monday.

Weiss was serving as town clerk at the time of his death.

Over his 40 years of service, he was a town councilman and served as town supervisor in addition to working as a volunteer.

Weiss was a life member of the Sawkill Fire Department serving as treasurer and president.

He focused each summer in the 1990s on growing the recreation program including establishing the area’s first ADA accessible wooden playground, a Thursday evening “Dennyball” all-hands-on-deck softball game, and his end-of-the-summer ice cream party.

Weiss held leadership roles in a number of volunteer boards and committees ranging from softball coach, umpire, and league president at the Town of Ulster Little League, to founder and team captain of the Bridge Over Troubled Waters team at the American Cancer Society, and director and state hand for many school talent shows and Christmas pageants.

For the last 10 years, he served as a volunteer at Bethel Woods.

“There is no doubt that his greatest and proudest roles were that of husband, father and grandfather,” the family said.

Weiss served in the US Navy from 1971 to 1976 and retired from the New York State Bridge Authority after over 20 years of service on the Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge.

Details of the family’s celebration of his life will be announced in the coming days.
