WHITE PLAINS – A Highland Mills man Tuesday entered a guilty plea in federal court in connection with a massive scheme to defraud Polar Air Cargo Worldwide, Inc.
Federal authorities said Carlton Llewellyn, 55, pled guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
According to allegations contained in the indictment and statements made in court proceedings, Llewellyn and nine others participated in a massive scheme to defraud Polar.
At the time of the alleged fraud, Llewellyn and three co-defendants were senior executives of Polar, and six others owned and operated various Polar vendors and customers.
Llewellyn was vice president of operations, system performance, and quality for Polar.
The authorities alleged that the defendants agreed to accept some $23 million in kickbacks from the vendor defendants and reaped substantial financial benefits as a result of their secret ownership interest in certain Polar vendors, in exchange for ensuring that those vendors received favorable business arrangements with Polar.
When sentenced in May, Llewellyn could be sentenced to up to five years in prison. He has also agreed to forfeit almost $348,000 and make restitution to Polar of $305,800.
