MONTICELLO- Dan Hust, Sullivan County Director of Communications, traveled to New York City last week to participate in a panel discussion on utilizing AI (artificial intelligence) in government.
Hust spoke about the countyโs small-scale, rural application of this AI, through the countyโs web-based chatbot named โSaige.โ
โI wanted to show how itโs possible for a lightly populated, upstate municipality to still undertake industry-leading steps to better serve taxpayers,โ said Hust.ย He shared shared that, for example, calls to the County Clerkโs office dropped by nearly two-thirds within four months of โSaigeโsโ debut.
โIt was able to answer questions like โWhere are you located?โ and โWhat are your hours?โ โ freeing up our staff to focus on the more complex needs of the public,โ said Hust.ย โWe arenโt implementing AI to replace staff but to complement and support them.โ
Hust noted that Sullivan County has chosen to adopt AI before virtually any other similarly-sized municipality in the nation and that he believes smaller municipalities will follow suit.
โI was honored to have had the opportunity to share our experiences and successes in harnessing a small piece of AIโs potential for the public good,โ said Hust.ย โAnd I am proud to be part of a team dedicated to utilizing cutting-edge technologies to enhance efficiency, transparency, and accessibility in serving our community.ย The future is wide open, and we look forward to improving and expanding generative AIโs capabilities at the local level.โ
To optimize the performance of the countyโs new AI system, Hust encourages the public to ask questions of โSaigeโ and to let it know when itโs gotten an answer right or wrong by clicking โHelpfulโ or โNot Helpful.โย The chatbot has the ability to โlearnโ from this feedback to further optimize its performance.
