The AAA of Central and Western New York is advising motorists to be on the alert for deer and other animals now that deer hunting season has opened in most parts of New York State.
The AAA noted that there were 36,743 animal-related accidents last year across the state, causing personal injuries in 1,675 of them and two deaths.
November is the most active month for crashes due to hunting season, which began Nov. 18. It also is the height of the mating season for deer.
According to state data, Erie County ranked ninth among New York’s 62 counties with 1,052 animal-related crashes in 2022, the AAA said. Monroe County, which includes Rochester, was second with 1,490. Orange County in the Hudson Valley had the most – 1,633.
