The latest legislation in New York has a tie to the Buffalo Bills.
On Friday, Gov. Kathy Hochul signed S.7424/A.366A, which will require camps and youth sports programs to have automated external defibrillator (AED) implementation plans, as well as to have at least one person trained to properly use the AED at camps, games and practices.
The Buffalo Bills return to Cincinnati on Sunday night, and when Damar Hamlin takes the field, it won’t matter if he plays. It matters that he is there.
Hochul pointed to Bills safety Damar Hamlin in her reasoning for the legislation.Â
“We all remember the terrifying moment when Damar Hamlin was injured last February (sic), but young athletes at schools and camps could be exposed to similar risks,” Hochul said in a statement. “By requiring camps and youth sports programs to establish an AED implementation plan, kids will be safer and teams will be prepared. I want every parent in New York to know: We’re doing everything we can to keep your kids safe.”
Hamlin has noted often since his cardiac arrest, on Jan. 2, that he never thought about where the closest AED was when he was playing sports growing up. Since his emergency and recovery, he has made it a priority to expand access to AEDs.
