Improved conditions over most of Western New York should not mislead those attending the Buffalo Bills-Pittsburgh Steelers game into thinking it won’t be a harsh environment prior to and during the action. While travel conditions in and near Orchard Park will be getting better, this will still be one very cold game.
During mid-morning, a delayed northward shift of the lake snow band was underway. A lighter wind field is not allowing nearly as much inland penetration of the band, as was the case Saturday night and Sunday.
Any lingering lake snow today will be north of the Buffalo Southtowns and the stadium. The somewhat weaker band should be north of the city, on a flow out of 230 degrees on the compass. Such a wind orientation tends to push the band farther north. At 10 a.m., the temperature was 9 degrees with an 8 knot wind, around 10 mph. The wind was oriented from 230 degrees on the compass. While only light snow was observed at the airport, heavier snow was falling in the shortened band downtown and close to the Lake Erie shore. METAR observations are used most often by pilots and meteorologists, though they supply more precise weather information, which can be useful to laypersons and travelers, as well.
