Fire levels hay barn

SPARROWBUSH – A storage shed used for hay and other miscellaneous items brought firefighters to the scene of a well involved blaze on Peenpack Trail in Sparrowbush just after 8:30 a.m. on Friday.

Sparrowbush Engine Company 1st Assistant Chief Carl VanHorn said the approximately 16-foot by 24-foot building was located about 1,600 feet from the road.

Firefighters had two lines in operation and help from the homeowner to extinguish the blaze.

VanHorn said the homeowner used his excavator to pull the shed apart, and handlines were then able to soak the structure with water and put the fire out.

The fire was knocked down in about 10 minutes and overhaul was started, according to Sparrowbush Second Assistant Chief Michael Reiser, who was among the first on scene.  Reiser said the shed was a small barn type-structure the homeowner was using for storage.

Other units on scene were Huguenot Fire Company, and Port Jervis, Matamoras, and Westfall Township Fire Departments, as well as Town of Deerpark Police and Port Jervis Volunteer Ambulance.

No one was injured, and the cause of the fire was not immediately known.
