Roosevelt Park in Buffalo’s Kensington-Bailey neighborhood will be getting a major face-lift, thanks to a $2.085 million grant from a National Park Service program.
Improvements for the park, built in the 1950s on 9.2 acres in a residential area behind what is now the Charter School of Inquiry on Edison Avenue and next to the Kensington Expressway, will include a walking/running loop, two tennis courts, two basketball courts, an adult fitness area, a picnic area, park entry terrace and chess area.
Additionally, the funding will allow the city to plant 100 new trees, make significant improvements to the green landscaping, and add two pavilions with lighting and site furnishings.
“The revitalization of Roosevelt Park is not just about bricks and mortar – it’s a commitment to the well-being of the Buffalo community,” said Sen. Charles Schumer, who helped acquire the funding. “For years, the park’s aging facilities have been a concern to community members.”
The National Park Service’s Outdoor Recreation Legacy Partnership program increases outdoor recreation opportunities and access to nature for economically disadvantaged urban communities.
