Since 2009, thousands of Erie County residents have flocked to the Erie County Auto Bureau in Eastern Hills Mall to handle driver’s license transactions, exchange license plates, take a learner’s permit test or register vehicles.
One of six county auto bureaus, it’s one of only two that offers Saturday hours.
The Transit Road location draws residents from all over the region. The mall owner appreciated the influx of customers and allowed the auto bureau to occupy mall space rent free.
But that changed in July, when Uniland Development issued eviction notices to most of the mall’s tenants โ including the auto bureau.
Since then, Erie County Clerk Michael “Mickey” Kearns said he’s been pushing to keep the Department of Motor Vehicles auto bureau location open and he expects a new lease deal to be reached soon.
“This will be a great deal for us,” Kearns said. “I think it would be devastating to lose this facility.”
