The 2024 Erie County Envirothon, a hands-on, outdoor environmental science competition for local high school students, will be on March 28 and April 25, according to the Erie County Soil and Water Conservation District.
The competition, which will be held at Village Green Park in Elma, requires students to employ teamwork to complete a series of challenges in the subject areas of wildlife, forestry, aquatics, soils, and the 2024 Envirothon topic, “Renewable Energy for a Sustainable Future.”
The Envirothon, which is sponsored by the county Soil and Water Conservation District, also provides students with an opportunity to learn from and connect with local specialists. To prepare for the challenge, students must attend a workshop at which local natural resource professionals give presentations on the various Envirothon topics.
The competition is open to students in grades nine through 12, whose teams may be formed through a high school, Board of Cooperative Educational Services, 4-H Club, sovereign Native American school, home school or any other sanctioned local, regional, state or nationally recognized club.
The winning team of students at the Erie County Envirothon will advance to the New York State Envirothon, which will be held on May 22 and 23 at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva.  Â
