The Republican primary race for a rural Assembly seat in the Southtowns heated up this week with two endorsements and the involvement of a controversial political consultant with ties to former President Donald Trump.Â
Assembly Member David J. DiPietro, R-East Aurora, picked up two endorsements this week in his bid to stave off a Republican primary challenge by Mitchell A. Martin, an aide to Erie County Sheriff John Garcia.Â
DiPietro announced Wednesday that he has received the endorsement of the State Conservative Party, which may carry weight in the 147th District that includes towns in southern Erie County and in Wyoming County.Â
Both of them lost – one by 36 votes, the other by more than 36,000. It isn’t the margins, though, that tell us something about today’s Republican Party. It was how each candidate reacted in the face of defeat.
“I have worked closely with the Conservative Party my entire career because we share core values, and I am humbled by and thankful for the support the statewide and county parties have always given to me,” DiPietro said in a written statement. “They are real and true leaders, by example.”Â
