A Lancaster man faces a stiff financial civil penalty for reportedly going through the security checkpoint Tuesday at the Buffalo-Niagara International Airport with a loaded .45 caliber gun in his carry bag, according to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.
The TSA did not release the man’s identity, but noted his was the sixth handgun that officers detected at the airport’s checkpoint so far this year.
The gun, which was loaded with 10 bullets, including one in the chamber, as well as an additional magazine with 10 more bullets, was detected by a TSA officer operating the X-ray unit at the checkpoint. The man had a valid New York State pistol permit and voluntarily surrendered the firearm to NFTA police, who cited him on a weapons charge.ย
Passengers are permitted to travel with unloaded firearms in a hard-sided locked case and only in checked baggage. The locked case is required to be taken to the airline check-in counter to be declared.
